WHY YOU NEED A WILL….RIGHT NOW!

Do you have a will?  If you answered “no”, you are certainly not alone.  Many people do not think about getting a will for different reasons:  1. It’s not on your list of priorities (although it should be), 2. It’s tough to think about your own death, or 3. You haven’t decided what you will do with your assets when you die.

A will should be a top priority at any stage of life.  If you don’t have a will, things WILL get complicated for your family in the event of your death. We understand the conversation is difficult, but once you complete a will, we know you will have peace of mind.

To stress the importance of getting a will, here are some scenarios of how not having a legal document in place could become a problem if you die unexpectedly.

  1. CHILDREN: Imagine a total stranger (the state) deciding where your children will live after you die. What if they are put in state custody or in a foster home? As you can imagine, this is not a scenario you want to play out.  A will ensures your children will be placed with the people you choose.
  2. ESTATE: All you have worked for (money, real estate, valuables) and where it goes, could be decided by a third party. You want to make sure your family is taken care of in the way you want them to be taken care of after you die.  A will ensures your estate will be distributed according to your wishes.
  3. END-OF-LIFE DECISION MAKING: You are in a terrible accident or have a horrific medical event and are now on life support. Make the decision easy for your family.  If you don’t, you will remain on life support, racking up thousands of dollars in medical bills that your family can’t afford.  This is perhaps the most important part of having a will.  You don’t want to live on life support or have your family burdened by unexpected bills.  A will ensures that your after-life wishes are carried out.

There is no good time to do a will.  Delaying will only leave you feeling anxious and unsettled about what the future holds for your family if you die. DO NOT WAIT!
